This combination of shades and forms evokes found sentiments. The garland of cornflowers has lost none of its rhythm, despite being stripped down and stylized to an extreme. The orderly sequence of flowers and leaves sparkles as a chain of vibrant colours. Even the colder greens and blues are warmed by the fervent red of the ribbon and flowers. Attractive in its simplicity, the origins of this charming motif go back to the 18th century European porcelain manufactories, where it was said to be a favourite with Marie-Antoinette. This pattern (“Little Cornflowers in a Garland”) was inspired by the serenely blue cornflower of the meadows. It was easily incorporated into at Herend, where the painters are especially fond of this flower, found so commonly in the surrounding pastures. The undulating rim of the snow-white ground of the pieces is picked out with gold. There is a thin, red line running round the ledge, to which cling the twining stylized cornflowers. This beautiful garland is surrounded by little flowers with blue petals, red anthers and green leaves. The repeated motif is livened by a contrast of warm and cool colours that enhances the harmony emanating from the décor.
The History of Cornflower pattern goes back to the second half of the 18th century. The ‘Angouleme sprig’, derived from botanical books of the period, appeared in Paris, and became a favorite with Queen Marie-Antoanette. The motif was readily adopted at Herend, where the charming little bright blue flower of the fields was close to the heart of painters. This simple pattern consists of an extremely stylized garland of cornflowers with blue petals, red stamens and green leaves, twining endlessly along a red band round the rim. Strewn in the middle there are tiny single flowers. The calm of the regular reception is enhanced by the alternation of warm and cool colors. This enriches and renders attractive this youthful, charming decor, reminiscent of the cleanliness and innocence of a maiden’s chamber.
