Indian Basket Herend Sets

This pattern, recalling the fineness of Far Eastern porcelains, consists of branches and fronds covered with leaves and stylized flowers, issuing from a reed fence like a basket. Around this basket is a ring of dedicatedly painted garlands. The Indian basket decor can be traced back to Japanese Kakiemon porcelains. It’s name derives from the Dutch East Indian Company, whose ships brought vast quantities of Far Eastern china to Europe during the 17th century. European porcelain painters took note of the Fleurs des Indes – Indian basket (others also call it French basket) in the early 18th century. It soon became one of the favorite motifs at their manufactories.

The variant developed at Herend Manufactory was originally produced in purple. It was later painted in other variants like green, orange, blue, yellow, lilac, maroon, and several colors. Please take note that you can order Indian basket items in any colors by us. You only need to write us a message, saying that you ordered the “green” color, still, you prefer the “blue” variant. Of course we send you the variant you prefer. One of the most famous admirers of Indian Basket – Fleurs des Indes – was Empress Eugene, wife of Napoleon III. She used this service on the table of Elysee Palace when she gave a reception in honour of Emperor Francis Joseph at the Paris World Exposition of 1867.
